MB WAY is Portugal's dominant mobile payment app, operated by SIBS (the same company behind the Multibanco ATM network). It links a phone number to one or more Portuguese bank accounts and lets users pay people, businesses, and online stores instantly. Over 4 million Portuguese consumers use it, and it's supported by every major Portuguese bank: Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Millennium BCP, Santander Totta, Novo Banco, BPI, Crédito Agrícola, Montepio, ActivoBank, and more.
How MB WAY QR works
An MB WAY QR encodes a payment request — your registered phone number, a recipient name, an amount in EUR, and an optional message. When the payer scans it inside the MB WAY app or their banking app, the payment screen pre-fills. They confirm with their MB WAY PIN or biometrics and the funds transfer instantly, 24/7.
How to create an MB WAY QR
- Phone number — your Portuguese mobile number registered with MB WAY.
- Recipient name — displayed on the payer's confirmation screen.
- Amount (optional) — fixed payment amount in EUR.
- Message / description (optional) — short note shown to the payer.

The official MB WAY app is the primary scanner, and most Portuguese banking apps (Caixadirecta, Millennium, Santander, NB Smart, BPI, etc.) also support MB WAY QR scanning directly. Both routes use the same SIBS network.
Are there fees for MB WAY payments?
Person-to-person MB WAY transfers are free for both parties. Merchant payments (for businesses accepting MB WAY at POS or online) carry a small interchange fee paid by the merchant, typically lower than card fees.
Do I need a Portuguese bank account?
Yes. MB WAY requires a Portuguese mobile number and a Portuguese bank account at a participating bank. Tourists and non-residents generally can't register for MB WAY, though some banks offer non-resident accounts that support it.
