What is iDEAL?
iDEAL is the Netherlands' default payment method, used by over 70% of Dutch online consumers and increasingly accepted in-store via QR codes. Operated by Currence iDEAL, it's a direct bank-to-bank rail — payments authorize through the customer's own banking app and settle in real time. Every Dutch bank participates: ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, Bunq, ASN, SNS, Triodos, Knab, Regiobank, and more.
How iDEAL QR works
An iDEAL QR encodes a payment URL pointing to a specific iDEAL transaction (or a generic merchant link). When the customer scans it with their banking app, the payment screen pre-fills with the recipient, amount, and optional description. They authenticate with their bank's app login and the funds transfer instantly via the SEPA Instant rail.

Which Dutch banking apps support iDEAL QR scanning?
Every Dutch bank's mobile app: ING, Rabobank, ABN AMRO, Bunq, ASN Bank, SNS, Triodos, Knab, Regiobank, and others. iDEAL QR scanning is built into the standard banking app payment flow.
Do I need an iDEAL acquirer to generate the URL?
Yes. iDEAL transaction URLs are generated by an iDEAL-licensed payment service provider (Mollie, Stripe, Adyen, Buckaroo, MultiSafepay, Pay., Sisow, etc.) or by direct integration with iDEAL Issuer. Our generator turns the URL into a styled QR — it doesn't create the iDEAL transaction itself.
Are there fees for iDEAL transactions?
iDEAL is free for the consumer. Merchants pay a flat fee per transaction (typically 0.20–0.40 EUR depending on the acquirer and volume), which is much cheaper than credit card percentages. iDEAL's flat-fee model is one reason it dominates Dutch e-commerce.
Does iDEAL work outside the Netherlands?
iDEAL itself is Netherlands-only — payers must have a Dutch bank account. The new pan-European EPI (Wero) initiative is being built on top of iDEAL's infrastructure to extend it Europe-wide, but as of 2026 the consumer side is still primarily Dutch.
What's the maximum amount per iDEAL transaction?
iDEAL itself doesn't impose a fixed cap — limits are set by the payer's bank. Most Dutch banks allow up to 50,000 EUR per transaction, with daily caps. For very large amounts, the payer may need to raise their iDEAL or transfer limit in their banking app first.
