Interac e-Transfer is Canada's near-universal bank-to-bank money transfer service, supported by every major Canadian bank and credit union. It moves money between bank accounts using only the recipient's email or phone number — no account numbers, no routing details. Most transfers settle in under 30 minutes; Interac e-Transfer for Business and Request Money flows can settle near-instantly.
How an Interac QR works
Our generator builds a QR that encodes a "Request Money" payload: your email or phone, an amount in CAD, and a message. When a Canadian banking app scans it (most modern apps support QR scanning), the e-Transfer request screen pre-fills. The payer confirms, authenticates, and the funds land in your account.
How to create an Interac QR
Recipient email or phone — the address registered with your bank for Interac e-Transfer.
Recipient name — displayed in the payer's confirmation screen.
Amount (optional) — fixed payment amount in CAD.
Message / memo (optional) — short note like "Rent — November" or "Invoice #123".
Where to use Interac e-Transfer QR codes
Splitting bills with friends — one scan, no typing email addresses.
Rent payments to landlords.
Freelance invoices and small-business payments.
Garage sales, market stalls, and casual cash-replacement.
Which Canadian banks support Interac e-Transfer QR scanning?
Interac e-Transfer itself works at every Canadian bank and credit union. QR scanning is supported by the mobile apps of RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC, National Bank, Tangerine, Simplii, EQ Bank, Desjardins, and most credit unions. If a bank's app doesn't have a QR scanner yet, the recipient can manually enter the email or phone shown in the QR.
Are there fees for receiving an e-Transfer?
Most Canadian banks include unlimited free Interac e-Transfers with their chequing accounts. Some basic accounts charge $1–$1.50 per outgoing transfer. Receiving is almost always free. Auto-deposit registration eliminates the security question step and speeds up settlement.
Do I need to be in Canada to receive an e-Transfer?
You need a Canadian bank account. You can be physically anywhere in the world — as long as your bank account is at a participating Canadian institution and your email/phone is registered for e-Transfer, the funds will land.
What's the maximum amount per e-Transfer?
Limits are per-bank but typically $3,000–$10,000 per transaction with $10,000–$30,000 daily and $20,000–$50,000 weekly caps. Interac e-Transfer for Business supports higher amounts. Check your specific bank's limits in their app.
Is Interac the same as a wire transfer?
No. Interac e-Transfer is a domestic Canadian-only service that moves money between Canadian bank accounts using email/phone proxies. Wire transfers (SWIFT) are international, slower (1–3 business days), and have much higher fees ($15–$50). For international payments to Canada, use a wire or a service like Wise.
