MMS vs SMS QR Codes
SMS QR codes (sms: / smsto:) compose a 160-character text message. MMS QR codes (mms: / mmsto:) compose a multimedia message — the receiving device formats it as MMS, which means the recipient gets the same delivery channel they'd see for a photo message or group thread. On most modern handsets the difference is invisible to the user, but for telecom marketing flows that intentionally route through MMS for the higher size limit and inline-media support, you need the mms: scheme.

mms:— opens the composer to a new message (recipient may be empty, the user fills in).mmsto:— explicitly addresses to the supplied number; matches the SMS family for handler compatibility.
Behaviour differs slightly across platforms; in our experience mmsto: is the more reliable handler on Android, while iOS treats both equivalently.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why use MMS instead of SMS for a QR?
Three reasons: (1) carriers route MMS through different short-code lanes which may be required for paid services, (2) MMS has a much higher size limit than SMS so attached media works, (3) some loyalty and voting platforms only accept MMS.
Can I include an attachment in the QR?
No — the QR can only pre-fill the recipient and body text. Attachments have to be added by the user in the composer. If you need to deliver media, use a URL QR pointing to the file.
Will my carrier charge for sending MMS?
Depends on the user's plan. Most modern unlimited plans include MMS. Pay-per-message plans typically charge a few cents per MMS (more than SMS). The QR doesn't change billing — it just opens the composer.
Do international short codes work?
Short codes are country-specific; a US 5-digit short code won't work from a UK SIM, and vice versa. Use full E.164 numbers (with country prefix) for cross-border QRs.
Will iPhone treat mms: differently from sms:?
Both schemes open Messages and behave identically for the end user. The actual transport (SMS vs MMS) is decided by the network and the message contents at send time.
Can I pre-fill the subject line?
MMS has a subject field but no widely-supported URI parameter for it. Stick to the body parameter; users rarely add subjects manually.
Does this work with WhatsApp or iMessage?
No — those use their own URI schemes (whatsapp://, no public scheme for iMessage). For WhatsApp use the dedicated WhatsApp QR type.
