What is EAN-13?
EAN-13 (European Article Number 13, also called GTIN-13 — Global Trade Item Number) is the 13-digit barcode on virtually every retail product sold outside North America. The first 2-3 digits are the GS1 country code (978/979 = books, 30-37 = France, 40-44 = Germany/Austria, 49 = Japan, 50 = UK, etc.); the next block is the manufacturer; the last block is the product. The 13th digit is a Mod-10 check digit derived from the first 12 — we compute it for you, so paste your 12-digit GS1 number.
How to get a real EAN-13
Real EAN-13s are issued by GS1 (gs1.org) for an annual fee. For internal / dev / testing use, generate any 12-digit number. Do not sell products at retail with a self-issued EAN — major retailers verify GS1 ownership.

Where do I get an EAN-13 to use commercially?
From your country's GS1 member organisation (gs1.org). One-time setup fee + annual renewal. Thrift sellers can buy single resold EANs from third parties (Amazon used to accept them; now it requires direct GS1 issuance).
Will iPhone Camera scan EAN-13?
Yes since iOS 11. EAN-13 was one of the first formats Apple supported.
Why does my product show the wrong details when scanned?
Scanners look up the EAN against GS1's product database. If the EAN isn't registered, scanners just show the number.
What's the difference between EAN-13 and UPC-A?
UPC-A is the North American 12-digit predecessor; EAN-13 is its 13-digit superset. Every UPC-A is also a valid EAN-13 (with a leading 0).
What's a GTIN-13?
Same thing as EAN-13. GS1 standardised the term GTIN to cover all variants (GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, GTIN-14).
Can I print EAN-13 on small packaging?
Use EAN-8 (8 digits, narrower) for packages under ~3 cm² — gum, batteries, lipstick.
Is the check digit important?
Yes — it's how scanners detect read errors. We compute it correctly so don't paste a 13-digit number; just the first 12.
